As you all know, the Summit County Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity has been looking forward to breaking ground on our Build 2010. We have been hoping to break ground in June or July of this year.
Unfortunately, one of the developers we’ve been working with has had financial reversals. This means that the necessary infrastructure (sewers, water, roads and so forth) will not be put in this season. This means we must delay our build until this work is done.
We’re very disappointed about this turn of events.
There are some advantages, however, with starting later than we had planned. Several families have filled out applications to become Partner Families with Habitat. The extra time will allow them to save for the $1,000 down payment, get caught up on their bills and be in a strong financial position we when start the build.
It will also allow them to complete the sweat equity hours required before they can purchase their Habitat home.
For us, it means we will have additional time to do fund raising, apply for grants and get our local sponsors lined up.
So, even if we are not building, we’ll be working.
In addition, we will be starting two other important projects that will help support our building program. One is “A Brush With Kindness” and the other is a Habitat Restore.
“A Brush with Kindness” is a program that serves low-income homeowners (house/trailer/condo) who are having a difficult time maintaining their home. We are working with Habitat for Humanity – Colorado and HFH – International to finalize the program.
Habitat Restore is a program of Habitat, designed to keep recyclable and reusable building materials and supplies out of the landfills. A Restore also accepts appliances, cabinets, lighting and plumbing fixtures. We are hopeful that the hospitality and short-term rental industry here in Summit County can recycle their furniture through this program.
More information and specific volunteer opportunities for both of these programs will be listed soon.
The need for affordable housing continues, regardless of the economy. We need your support, your donations and your prayers.
